John Assaraf mentioned this in an interview I watched, and I think of it often. He continues to say that if you’re interested, you will do it as long as it’s easy, but if you’re committed, you will push through even when it gets difficult [I paraphrase, but that’s the gist of it].
I began to think about the businesses I’d been in before, and saw that I was really interested in them, but not really committed. When things got difficult, I blamed external factors and saw myself as the victim. Motivation fizzled out, and it took external factors (leaders, success stories etc) to get fired up about the business again. And guess what happened next? That’s right, I ran out of steam again. It was an unending cycle of getting motivated, trying (within my comfort zone) and not getting anywhere, losing motivation, listening to leaders to get motivated again, and repeat.
When I think about my coaching business, the feeling is different. THIS is commitment. I feel excited and energized when I think about it. I don’t need motivation from external forces. I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and done things that I’d never thought of doing before, but still being authentically me. I’ve had my share of challenges, but I don’t let them stop me. There is a different sense of ownership because I bring ALL of me into the business. I am hungry for knowledge to provide the best service to my clients. I am hungry to SERVE. I am hungry to help. I am hungry to make a difference. This hunger is a demonstration of commitment.
I also have a clear vision of the person I have to be to have the business I want. The clarity of my goal drives me to do the difficult things. I have grown leaps and bounds since making this commitment. I have developed traits that I never thought I’d have. I’ve overcome challenges which before proved to be the line I couldn’t cross. I have more confidence, gratitude, courage and curiosity than ever before. I BELIEVE in myself. All this came from commitment to my business, my calling, my mission.
The flame of interest fizzles, the flame of commitment doesn’t. In fact, when you’re committed to something, the desire to overcome obstacles becomes stronger.
