The Journey to A Purposeful, Authentic Life

Have you ever felt a quiet tug toward something – a dream, a goal, or a change – only to brush it aside because it seemed “unrealistic” or “selfish”? Or maybe you’ve chased a goal with all your might… only to feel strangely empty when you reached it?

If that resonates, you’re not alone. So many of us spend years running after things we think we should want, without ever asking the most important question:

“Why do I truly want this?”

Today, let’s gently unpack that. No pressure, no judgment – just curiosity.

The Two Kinds of “Why”

Our desires often come from two very different places:

  1. The Whisper (“Your Soul’s Why”)
  • Feels like: Warmth, quiet excitement, a sense of “rightness”
  • Sounds like: “I feel drawn to this,” “This lights me up,” “It just feels like me.”
  • Rooted in: Your core values, your intuition, your authentic self.
  1. The “Should” (“The Borrowed Why”)
  • Feels like: Heaviness, anxiety, obligation
  • Sounds like: “I should want this,” “Everyone else is doing it,” “It’ll prove I’m enough.”
  • Rooted in: Societal pressure, old expectations, fear of judgment.

Why Knowing Your True “Why” Changes Everything

When you chase a borrowed “why”:

  • Exhaustion follows even “success”
  • Motivation fades quickly
  • It feels like wearing someone else’s shoes—pinchy and all wrong!

But when you honor your soul’s why:

  • Energy flows even through challenges
  • Joy becomes part of the journey
  • You feel deeply and peacefully aligned

A Gentle Exercise: Tune Into Your Truth

Next time a desire pops up (big or small!), try this:

  1. Pause & Breathe: Sit quietly for 60 seconds. Place a hand on your heart.
  2. Ask: “If no one would ever judge me… would I still want this?”
  3. Notice: How does your body feel? Light? Heavy? Expansive? Dreadful? Your body knows before your mind does!
  4. Dig Deeper: “What would having this really give me?” (Peace? Freedom? Belonging? Growth?)

(Example: Wanting a promotion → True “why” might be: “To feel respected” or “To have creative freedom,” NOT just “To impress my parents.”)
